今日は “suck” を使った新しい表現、 “suck it up” の意味と使い方、その由来・語源をエリンに教えてもらったのでまとめますよ！

“suck it up” とは

エリンはよく “suck it up” って表現使うけど、あれなんなの？

“suck it up” は、「文句なんか言ってないで対処して」とか「がまんしてやって」っていう意味の表現だよ

“Just do it!” とか “Just deal with it!” みたいなかんじね

本当はやりたくないけど、やらなきゃどうしようもないような状況の時に使うよ

“suck it up” の由来

“suck it up” って直訳すると「それを吸い上げろ」ってことだよね？

「文句言わずに対処しろ」って意味になるのに由来とかあったりするの？

汚い話だけど、もし戦闘機のパイロットが飛行中に気持ち悪くなっちゃったとするでしょ？

もしそのまま酸素マスク内に吐いちゃったとすると、自分の胃酸とかが肺に入って死んじゃうの。

だから、もし生き延びたかったら “suck it up” するしかないの。

考えたくもないけど、生きるか死ぬかだから、文句言ってられないってことね。

The origin of the expression “Suck It Up” comes from WWII pilots. If a pilot happened to vomit into their Oxygen mask, they had to “suck it up” otherwise, they would breathe the acidic fumes into their lungs and die. The expression actually means to choose the lesser of two evils. “Suck up your vomit and live OR breathe in the acidic fumes and die.”
