今日は月に関する表現、“once in a blue moon” の意味と使い方をエリンに教えてもらったのでまとめますよ！
“Once in a blue moon” とは
“once in a blue moon” は頻度を表す表現で、「めったにない」「ごくまれにしかない」ことに対して使われます。
「ブルームーンくらい珍しいこと」という意味で、否定的な文で使います。
例えば、“He drinks once in a blue moon.” といえば、「彼はめったに飲まない」という意味になります。

「ブルームーン」って「青い月」ってことだよね？
確かに珍しいだろうけど、「ブルームーン」ってなんだ？？
というわけで調べてみました。
“blue moon” は厳密に言うと、「青く見える月」のことではなく、「春分・夏至・秋分・冬至を境に区別した季節（約3か月）の中で、4つ目の満月がみられるとき、その3つ目の満月のこと」だそうです。
通常、満月は1年に12回（すなわちひと月に1回）みられるのですが、数年に一度だけ、1年で13回満月がみられる年があるそうです。
そのため１つの季節（約3か月）のうちに満月が４つ見られるのは珍しいことで、そこから「めったにおきないこと」「めずらしいこと」を “once in a blue moon” というようになったとのことです。
※辞書によっては「ひと月に満月が2回見られるとき、その2つ目の満月のこと」という言い方をしているものもありますが、厳密に言うと間違いのようです。
The term has traditionally referred to an “extra” full moon, where a year which normally has 12 full moons has 13 instead. The “blue moon” reference is applied to the third full moon in a season with four full moons, thus correcting the timing of the last month of a season that would have otherwise been expected too early. This happens every two to three years (seven times in the Metonic cycle of 19 years). The March 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope misinterpreted the traditional definition, which led to the modern colloquial misunderstanding that a blue moon is a second full moon in a single solar calendar month with no seasonal link.
Owing to the rarity of a blue moon, the term “blue moon” is used colloquially to mean a rare event, as in the phrase “once in a blue moon”.
