play it by ear
to do something by feel and instinct rather than with a plan, to improvise
もともとは「楽譜を見ないで即興で演奏する（耳できいて演奏する）」という意味から派生した表現のようです。
The original meaning of this term was to play music without sheet music, meaning you either remembered the music or improvised it.
