この英語表現の意味、わかりますか？
日本語で言う「デリカシー」ではないですよ！
今日は “delicacy” の意外な意味とその使い方をエリンに教えてもらったのでまとめますよ！
“delicacy” ＝ 「珍味」？
日本で食べた、一番変なものって何？
いろいろあるけど、白子かな。
最初は何かわからず食べたけど、後で魚の精巣だって知ってぞっとした。
まあ、いわゆる珍味だからね。僕も苦手だよ。
そういえば「珍味」って英語で何て言うの？
delicacy
something especially rare or expensive that is good to eat:
例えば、キャビアとかエスカルゴとかね。

Oh, my God. You gotta hear this! We tried this delicacy called balut, but ugh, it grossed us out!

Why? What is it?
（なんで！？何それ？）
It’s a developing duck embryo boiled and eaten from the shell. You could actually see the beak and stuff, even feathers!
（バロットっていうのは成長段階のアヒルの胎児のことでね、殻のままゆでて食べるの。くちばしとか、羽根とかまであるんだよー！）
Yikes! Ugh, I feel I’m gonna puke.
（うげぇ。吐きそう）
Have you ever had Shirako before?

What is that?
（何それ？）
It’s fish testicles. We eat it raw just like sashimi. It’s considered a delicacy in Japan.
（魚の精巣だよ。刺身みたいに生で食べるんだ。日本では珍味とされてるんだよ）
Jiminy Christmas! That sounds gross!
（マジ！？気持ち悪！！）
I know. I think it’s weird too, even though I’m Japanese. I mean, who would have thought of trying it raw…?!
（だよね。日本人も私も変だと思うもん。だってさ、だれが生で食べてみようと思ったわけ？）
“Jiminy Christmas” は “Jesus Christ” の婉曲表現。
少し古い言葉ですが、エリンのお父さんはよく使ってます。
ディズニー映画「ピノキオ」に出てくるジミニー・クリケットもここから来ているとか来ていないとか。
“Jimmy Christmas” or “Jiminy Christmas” is a direct reference to Jesus Christ and dates back to 1664, when it was first recorded as “Gemini,” a twist on the Latin phrase Jesu domini. The name of the Walt Disney character Jiminy Cricket was probably based on this phrase!

I’m too lazy to cook…so probably just some rice and natto.

I’ve tried it once, but I’m not a big fan of it.

The texture! It’s all sticky, stringy and gooey. It grosses me out!
（あの食感がもう！べたべた糸引くし、ぬるぬるしてるし。気持ち悪い！）
Haha. It’s kind of an acquired taste. You should give it another shot. It might grow on you.
（はは、まぁ慣れてくると美味しいよ。もう一回食べてみてよ。好きになるかもよ）
No. Never ever again. It’s disgusting!
（絶対イヤ。ぞっとするもん！）
Come on. It’s not that bad! You know what though, it’s very good for your health. It’s high in protein and fiber.
（ねぇ。そんな悪くないでしょ！知ってる？納豆ってすごく体にいいんだよ？たんぱく質も食物繊維もたっぷりだし）
Okay. Let me ask you one question. If you were not Japanese, would you ever eat that? The stinky and slimy fermented delicacy?
（よし、ひとつ聞くけどさ、もし日本人じゃなかったら、食べようと思う？あのべたべた、ぬるぬるした、発酵したあの珍味をさ）
Ah…now that you mention it, yeah you’re right. You got me.
（うーん、言われてみれば一理あるな。。やられたよ）

でもその偉業（？）のおかげで今の食文化があるんですよね。
ありがたや、ありがたや。
そういえば、エリンは馬を愛する人が多いケンタッキー州出身で、実際にエリンの実家でもペットとしてでっかい馬を飼ってるだけど（すごい話や）、初めて「馬刺し」を見たときはめちゃくちゃ驚いてたな。
今ではうまそうに食ってるけど 笑
